The Relationship between Income Status, Alcohol Consumption and Alcohol harm: Validation of Alcohol Harm Paradox
Kim Yong-Seok

Lee Sok-Ho
Abstract
When alcoholic behaviors are examined through the perspective of income status, the individuals with higher income have a tendency to drink more and to experience less alcohol related problems than the individuals with lower income. This type of phenomenon has been labeled as 'alcohol harm paradox.' Although a number of studies on alcohol harm paradox have been published abroad it is not the case in South Korea. Therefore the purpose of this study is to examine alcohol harm paradox in South Korea. A total of 5,255 adults over 19-year old who had an experience of alcohol were drawn from 13th Korea Welfare Panel. Results showed that the alcohol harm paradox was found in South Korea indicating that as household income went up, the level of alcohol consumption went down and alcohol harm became low. As for alcohol related problems, alcohol harm paradox suggests that income status should be considered as well as practical approaches.
